2017
In celebration of Computer Science Education Week 2017, Central York Students participated in Hour of Code 2017, the largest learning event in history. In addition to the activities provided online by code.org and many other organizations, we hosted several expert voices and offered an evening event for community families. Online activities remain available year-round, so everyone can try coding at any time!
Our expert voices included Central staff and grads in computer science-related fields, a developer from Schoology, a Samsung Solve For Tomorrow winner, and a robotics expert from Penn Air.
At our family event, participants were able to use computers and iPads to complete many programming activities, be a programmer or robot as they tried to create snowflakes and icicles in unplugged (hands-on) activities, learn to play with Osmo and Dash and Dot robots, learn coding with Cubelets, and use a Raspberry Pi photo booth assembled and coded by staff and alumni. Over two hundred people attended this event, which was sponsored by the high school iTeam. Photos from our Family Event, Dec. 7, 2017

2019
During Computer Science Education Week 2019, members of the CYHS iTeam encourage all Central community members to try an Hour of Code. This is the largest learning event in the world; people from over 180 countries have tried coding for an hour (or more). Members of this high school club hosted a Family and Community event Monday December 9th at the High School Hub. Participants enjoyed the coding activities as well as learning to code with robots such as Ozobot or Dash and Dot. They also tried their hands at unplugged activities such as paper circuits, binary bracelets and Cubelets.
Later in the week two of our members visited Mrs. Savard’s class at Stony Brook and helped with the Hour of Code activities. We hope that everyone who reads this article will try an Hour of Code.
Thank you to all CYHS iTeam members who planned and volunteered at these events!
2020
This year we were unable to host our community evening event, but all staff and students were encouraged to try an hour of code! We also had virtual guest speakers.
